That's just flat out wrong. The root language must be maintained and built upon for the second language to be well established- and no matter how long kids have been here, with support for both languages even older kids can achieve. That's why maintaining and educating in Spanish, as well as English, is important (though it should not be education in Spansih to the exclusion of English). All the studies on language acquisition tell us this. Check some of them out. In the end the bilingual brain is a better brain- but it takes longer to build one, and the root language must be nurtured. The kids that do the very worst are the ones who spoke a language other than English, and whose root language is cut off. Thos kids are pretty much doomed- thank you American education, and the provincial outlook of people who decide on American ed.
