U6 is a more realistic number...it includes the marginally employed (part time workers who need full time)
the gov't actually keeps track of this, but it's not the 'headline' number that gets reported....here is a pretty good article in slate (numbers are dated, from last october) but will give you a good idea of how this is calculated....btw, U6 doesn't track self employed individuals that are having severe cuts in their work flow, oh and it certainly doesn't track the illegals who have lost their jobs and never counted in the first place <g>
