The Reps are handicapped by the Reagan legacy now, the idea that they win by running against government as the brave, pure outsiders. Bush and Rove trashed that legacy by running on it, then governing in a very different, warped fashion. So the Reps don't know any other theme, but their credibility on that platform is shot to hell. And the zealots in the party aren't making room for people who know to govern effectively. Which coincidentally is all the electorate cares about in the midst of a crushing crisis. This morning NPR had a piece about an unemployed guy who moved into his minivan, and amazingly allowed two other guys to join him there. People are starting to hurt BAD. And the Republican answer is to step back and let the magic marketplace fix it all?
