In my personal experience its mostly more racist comments and casual racism in the north, or perhaps I should more specifically say the New York area, its not like I've lived all over the north or the south. Things like "that used to be a good neighborhood, but then it went black". Or sometimes something more extreme, like people telling you about police racial harassment. As for severe racial violence and such, it wasn't so common in either place that you would see it too often, more like something you would hear on the news, or maybe sometimes a friend would witness it and tell you about it. But such violence seemed about as common in the north as the south.
