I suspect police work is like the airline industry, thousands of operations going off without a hitch daily but when poor judgment causes one to go wrong it becomes very newsworthy. Years ago in my county, a guy came at a deputy sheriff with a sling blade. Instead of putting about 10 rounds in the biggest part of the body mass(which would have probably been my first option), he tried shooting the nut in the thigh and then the other one when that failed to slow the advance. Despite the deputy's good intentions, he severed both femoral arteries and the guy bled to death.....It's not a job that I would want.
