Hi GZ. Thanks for the alert. I read that you should save your placemarks to your hard drive first.

Upgrading to GE5 should not affect your placemarks in "My places". However, it is always a good idea to take a backup, things can occasionally go wrong, even without an upgrade. Simply right click on "My Places" and choose "Save as". Save them somewhere you can easily find them again.

You places are normally stored in your profile in a file called myplaces.kml:

C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Google\GoogleEarth\myplaces.kml (XP)
C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Google\GoogleEarth\myplaces.kml (Vista)
"Macintosh HD" > username > "Library" > "Application Support" > "Google Earth" > "myplaces.kml" (Mac)

Linux:
/home/username/.googleearth/
or more generically
~/.googleearth/
(~/ is a shortcut for your own home directory)

If you run a regular backup, you may find that this file is included.
