He can now I guess. My friends Mike and Dan are two of Alaska's millionair fishermen i.e. Bristol Bay permits, herring fishing and Dan is a herring, sardine, salt lake shrimp and salmon spotter. Mike once made $75,000 in fifteen minutes (one set)during a herring open in Sitka, as a deck hand. He paid for his Bristol Bay permit with the money. So for 30 years they fished during the summer and surfed in the winter. Mexico and central America mostly. Couple of LA transplants. Anyway Mike said when Krakauer ended up near his place near San Blas, I think, he taught him to surf. MIke is a very charismatic big guy. Real funny.
