What an interesting "This I Believe" piece. It's one of NPR's finest social projects, IMO. Not only are they done on a national level (through NPR) but many states now are soliciting and broadcasting them. I did one last year about living with the knowledge that slavery thrived in New England before the Civil War (a fact we were not taught as children).

My favorite line from the piece you posted:

And I have come to believe that people without jobs are not free.

Freud famously said that people need two things, love and work.

He was right.

Our task as Americans, and throughout the world, is to broaden what "work" means. And to be willing to do it.
