Gates, with his efforts on education, does better the lives of women. The best defense for women is to be educated, and to live around educated men. Remember, the more educated people are the more liberal they tend to be, which is what you'd expect. Ignorant makes people fearful of what is different, and keeps them clinging to old destructive patterns of behavior.
