My son and I were at a Costco yesterday in a lower working class neighborhood. We left because the check out line was one hour. Most carts had paper towels and bottled water, two things I no longer buy.

I say we are no where near bottom until people figure out that water comes free to their tap.

The mall was very crowded yesterday but very few people were carrying packages.
It seems to be the recessions answer to getting out of the house and being, somehow, entertained.
After all, malls are climate controlled and free.

>>>All in all, if lower pump prices hold, the consumer will be back in force by Xmas.<<<

Cornbread, Cornbread, Cornbread. You know I love you man. I think about you everytime I drive on the SureKill Expressway by the Girard Street exit near the zoo and I look up and see your name on the concrete retaining wall.

But don't be a stooooooooopid dork.

Barack, Nancy, and Harry have already sharpened thir knives and are going after the oil cmpanies. I mean....like....if messing with Social Security was reaching for the third rail, gasoline taxes are the next best thing. But they are doing it. I think I shall have to email them the number for the suicide prevention hotline.

Now we have all of this global warming nonsense. But it looks like we will have this lunatic cap and trade carbon tax. The CEO of Duke Energy says that that will boost electricity prices 40% in Ohio and Indiana. I am sure you know how strong elployment is in those two states with the robust auto and auto parts industries. BTW: Those in the know realize that the power behind cap and trade lies in Nancy, Barbara, and Diane. California is already so green that they will be getting credits to sell to Ohio, and Indiana. Nothing but a big transfer tax to the West Coast.

Remember how FDR killed the economic recovery in '38 or so by trying to balance the budget by raising taxes....after all of those years of stimulus and WPA, etc. With one hand Congress is giving away money, and with the other they are taking it away. Except they are taking it away before we have even hit bottom. Sounds like one big clusterf*&k to me. Poor Adam Smith's invisible hand will have absolutely no price signals to follow for three years.

Gasoline consumption is back up. But the production projects are waaaaaaaaaaayy down - and the reduced tax credits in the GOM aren't helping one bit. Clowngress is making us more dependent than ever on foreign crude. That spring will snap back real hard, real soon.

Jim Rogers keeps telling the unemployed investment bankers to drive their Maseratis out to idaho to become farmers. When you think about it, that is about all that the US has left to exports. Potatoes. Oh. And Treasury bills, notes and bonds. But, nobody will want any of them after June or thereabouts.

We might get a bounce here. Then another grinding down leg. Every other day, CR posts that graph of the four Big Bears. I look at that and my eyes glaze over.

Got food??? K-Rations and the like?? Botteled water?? A few extra rounds?? Kevlar vests????

You forgot about rapid refunds and Soc. Sec. checks coming.

Over-whitholding tends to get people to spend money now they would have blown earlier.

I've noticed grocery stores busier on Friday evenings, which I take to be a sign of more people living paycheck to paycheck.

Mr. Cornbread,

Here is a quick synopsis of our weekend shopping and observations and maybe a little advice or warning about a possible coming shortage of lead.

Yesterday, we went to our favorite coin shop and bought a little silver in small bars (5-10 oz) and rounds, the place was buzzing.. She advised to buy in small lots, small bars, coins etc so that you can use them individually for trade or purchase.. Makes sense to me..

Then went to Sportman's Warehouse to get a little lead.. The shelves were EMPTY.. I tell you EMPTY.. It was SURREAL..

Then to Costco, it was booming of course..

So we went to Scheels this morning hunting for that elusive lead, just as big or bigger than Cabelas and not quite as bad but NO 38 Special, had about 5 boxes of 357 Mag so I grabbed two, plus a few couple boxes of shotgun and rifle shells .... Left a few 357s for the next poor basturd..:) Anyway a clerk told me they ordered 12 cases of 38 sp and got just ONE this past week... And prices are going UP, big time.

So when checking out, I asked the girl how the ammo sales were going, "biggest item right now", she said.. Also said, she had a 2k sale of just ammo this morning and in the last week or two, had an 8K sale JUST in ammo. I am always chatting with the retail workers to get a feel of things.. It helps..

Chatted with a customer, telling him about how empty Sportsman's Warehouse was and he told me if I wanted to get anything at Sportsman's W, I had to get there at 11:00 am Thursdays when they deliver.. Everything will be gone in an hour or so..

So I guess people are preparing for the worst and praying for the best..

And these are big stores, nationwide..

This does not add up to me Mr. CBWH... If lower pump prices hold, that is a stimulus in itself. However, what about incomes lost in rising unemployment?

About a day or two ago you had some complaints about ringing zero on your register. A day different makes a trend?
