Edwin, I'm a Family Doc in Ottawa. Re alopecia and Merck's product. They have a drug called Proscar (Finasteride) which is used in benign prostatic hypertophy(to prevent the prostate from gettng bigger as well as shrinking it). It blocks the conversion of testosterone to a more potent androgen. The dose for BPH is 5 mg and I think Merck is recommending 1 mg for the teatment of alopecia. I don't know if this has been approved as yet in Canada or the US. I think Minoxidil is useless. Both my sons 26 and 27 used it for 2 years without any results. Not having prescibed Proscar for alopecia, I can't recommend it. SR
