Since credit default swaps were allowed to mushroom into the trillions without control, you can start to guess. And complex mortgage-backed securities also went out the door with no oversight on the phony agency ratings or the phony mortgage documentation underpinning the whole thing.

As far as looking for a fresh start, I would start with those fundamental three lightly- or non-regulated problems. And we can revisit the repeal of Glass-Steagall that made much of the chaos possible as number 4.

Madoff could have been stopped under current laws. The rest of it? Nope.
