We've been considering doing the same thing. Cells are not as easy (or smooth) to hear through. A friend also keeps telling me that Skype is free. I have not investigated as of yet. With Skype though, one would land up in the same position if the electricity is knocked out.

I know, we've talked about that too...but so far, still have the land line. It's more comfortable to write something down and cradle the phone with a regular phone, than the cell. Plus, I am mindful of what happened with 9-11 and Katrina, etc....When the power goes out, or something else like that, often it knocks the cell towers out as well.

There is one other thing you could do....you could have a Voice Mail service (just messages only) at a VM/Answering Service.....I do have one, just in case I want to use it for messages ...It's easier to retrieve those than it is from the cell, plus is fairly cheap too....I can store 40 messages, and the service for the month is $12. That way your own phone number is private, and so is your address....<ggg>
