Or at least fear of getting America involved even more in the Middle East, which is kind of the opposite of what they want.

The hard-core amongst AQ don't "fear" anything about us.

Dr. Fadl has come to realize that that the organization he was critical in creating, Al Qaeda, is counterproductive -- that is, they kill some of us and we kill many more of them. That's the way it should be. But there is little chance that either Zawahiri or bin Laden would have adopted this view.

Those who believe AQ is about getting us out of the Middle East are missing the point, entirely.

Bin Laden has, on numerous occasions, pointed to our leaving the ME as a reason for more attacks. For example, when we left after Black Hawk Down he cited that as proof our lifestyle and freedoms could be defeated. The same was true after the other bombings in which we retreated during the Clinton years.

We, for years, rewarded their successes. It takes a very long time to undo that damage.
