Arnie and all: Iridium don't do dispatch. Trust me on this. Also, I know of no plans to develop dispatch down the road. Furthermore, would be shocked if Globalstar does dispatch. Anyone know for sure? Calling Mr. Imus, Mr. Smart (ain't that the truth) and Mr. Bubba.

While the topic's satellite comm., wanna know why the satellites have to be in low Earth orbit (LEO)? Cause otherwise you'd have a serious subscriber problem: their heads would explode!

Al: welcome to the club. Seconding Arnie, you have a *lot* of misinformation on NXTL.

Arnie:

Good post! What do accountant know? Guess you told me! I just listen to the bull from a client that got passed over by Nextel. Pittencrief wanted to acquire his system by trading stock, my client wanted out, big money. Now, he has to be content with making alot of money running a system that, he says, has five years to live.

As an accountant, with 30 years experience, my day consists of listening to the dreams of my clients. This is contrary to the conservative nature of accounting. Accountants account for past transactions, wishfull thinking is not in the text books. That doesn't mean that the dreams are not possible. It means:

PROVIDE FOR ALL POSSIBLE LOSSES, WHEN THAT IS DONE, GO FORWARD AT TWICE THE SPEED, YOU GOT IT COVERED.

I tell my cleints stories, based upon my experience, that gets them thinking obout the feasability of their dreams. It is my job to keep them in business, and expanding, so that they can pay their accountant.

Arnie, I used psychology on you and it worked. Quite frankly, after listening to my "left behind client" I had doubts about the real future of two way radio. After all, the user still has to push to talk, right?

Your educated response to my post enabled me to be reasonably assured that I was investing in a winner. I'm sure the new followers of this area were happy to read your response.

Thank you, and I hope that I didn't create the impression that I am
negative about Nextel's future. I just needed some reassurance that it is real and not a dream.

AL

Arnie:

After reading your posts, I want you to know that I like what you write, even though you showed no mercy and obviously don't take any prisoners. Sorry about exciting you with a psychology ploy.

When we both make the return on investment that we plan on, I will be the first to buy you a global cellular phone with a big battery pack.
Right now they market for $ 3500. (In 1998, when Nextel shows positive cash flow, the price will be much lower.)

The outfit in Palm Springs tried to sell me one while they were putting the sat antenna on my motor home. Suitcase phones are only cool in old James Bond movies.

Regards again

Humble Al Gutkin

MOT & GSM Mfrs Developing TDMA/CDMA Wireless Standard

At biz.yahoo.com sits a story of potential interest to NXTL shareholders. I don't pretend to understand it, and would appreciate your thoughts.

Unless I misunderstand, NXTL actually uses TDMA technology in its system. Does this mean that NXTL will be eventually able to offer CDMA compatable communications on its existing network, interfacing legacy TDMA handsets, CDMA handsets and dual-mode TDMA/CDMA handsets over the same network?

Does this also offer NXTL an opportunity to penetrate Europe, Eastern Europe and Russia with its expertise in such networks for workgroups, as that region develops a next-generation wireless demand?

A few paragraphs from the press release follow.

Doug (long NXTL)

"ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 22, 1997-- Motorola, Inc. said today that it plans to work with Siemens AG and four other leading GSM manufacturers to develop a next generation wireless standard for Europe that combines key elements of both Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) and Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) cellular technologies. "

* * *

"This proposed standard, known as FRAMES 1B, uses CDMA signal spreading techniques to enhance the capacity offered by conventional TDMA technology. Digitized voice and data would be transmitted on a 1.6 megahertz-wide channel using time-segmented TDMA technology. Each
time slot of the TDMA channel would be individually coded using CDMA technology, thus supporting multiple users per time slot."

<i."''The FRAMES 1B proposal meets our GSM customers' requirements for an efficient, cost-effective upward migration from their current technology to third-generation systems and handsets,'' said Adrian Nemcek, corporate vice president and general manager of Motorola's European Cellular Infrastructure Group. ''An important advantage of a combined CDMA and TDMA system is that it will meet those requirements and provide a high quality, high capacity vehicle for wireless voice, data and video.''
