That's very cool.

It's not photographic technology, however. It's web technology. Specifically, it's Adobe Flash animation. The designer took a series of photographs, and then used Flash to create an interactive rectangle where mousing over horizontal strata in the picture makes different pictures fade in.

He or she could have just produced a time lapse animation, but instead had the nifty idea of putting the animation in the viewer's control.

It's really well done.
