Maybe your friend can buy a house and get the $8000 tax credit to offset the tax on the forgiven debt.

I am not trying to be callous or flipant, but there are a lot of programs and deals and ways to offset things. Since his taxes will be paying for these programs the next 10+ years, might as well take advantage of them.
