Where were all the internal controls from all these companies? Swept away by the huge bonuses from the obscene (short-term) profits that these companies made generating these lethal Ponzi schemes of risk. Perversely, rational free-market players will occasionally wipe themselves out in a quest for greater and greater gratification. That's where regulators have to step in to stop them from wiping themselves (and us) out. I tend to agree that we won't go back to the economy we had. But people do what they know, so most efforts will be focused in that direction until new directions emerge. I don't think we can all start making solar panels, however. Already a glut in the market.
