How about, (instead of "the people being STUPID"), it's because the people are looking for strong and determined action in the face of this economic collapse?

Could it prove to be true that those who are all negative and opposed to taking any actions at all are simply shooting themselves in the foot, and maybe consigning their politics to near-term oblivion?
