We've got a gun club not too far from my house. Sundays are always peppered with the sound of gunshots in the distance. They must be fun to shoot.

Great point about the longetivity of guns.

They do last a long time but, as someone with a basic knowledge of metallurgy, I wouldn't recommend firing one built before about WWII. Could be a very high quality piece but the metal changes over time, especially if it's been used a lot.

Definitely agree that they are interesting machines. When I took my first semi-automatic apart I was shocked at the complexity. There had to be 10-15 moving parts, and two similar looking ones can have totally different mechanisms. It is quite remarkable that they are as reliable as they are, at least if kept clean/dry.
