Assuming things really go to hell in a hand basket I can see a very good reason to have extra ammunition. In a word "trade".

There will be a need to have summer jobs for teenagers. Maybe cleaning up the yards of foreclosed houses, or digging ditches for flood control. Having them help with a food bank would also be a good idea.
