McCaskill criticizes Senate "hypocrisy"

primebuzz.kcstar.com

Remember, "These people are idiots?"

That was Missouri Sen. Claire McCaskill on the Senate floor a few weeks ago. She scorched Wall Street executives for pleading for federal aid, while still enjoying lush compensation from their failing companies.

Now she has a new target – Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky.

She intends to hit the Senate floor again this week to call out McConnell and other Republicans for "hypocrisy."

She said many of the same Republicans who denounced the Democratic economic stimulus bill for containing earmarks, are now "lining up at the trough."

The 2009 Omnibus spending before Congress is larded with more than $7 billion worth of earmarks, according to Taxpayers for Commone Sense, a nonpartisan government spending watchdog.

McConnell's share? $75 million worth.

"You can’t have it both ways," McCaskill said today on CNN. "You can’t be half-pregnant on this."

The Missouri Democrat is one of a handful of senators from both parties who refuse earmarks.
