He cannot be the face of the party. He is, after all, a man who has not lived what he preaches and while Americans do forgive and forget (see any president)...a guy who has had three divorces talking about family values, who has had an addiction he hid for quite a while (and initially denied) talking about a permissive culture on drugs, a guy who came back from a Dominican Republic vacation with a bunch of bootleg viagra......he is not somebody who can represent a political party and attract uncommited voters to a cause. Either he is a pundit, as some claim, an entertainer, as others claim, or the true voice of a political movement. If the last, his work on the first two roles will scuttle him again and again as his parodies and outrageous comments made over the years (always excused because he is just an "entertainer") will be thrown back at him and the republicans. A new Reagan type individual is needed. Yeah, it could be Romney....or someone not yet on the radar screen...but if it is Rush the republicans remain an unserious group in the minds of many people they would have to win across if they ever want to win another national election. Same if Michael Moore declared himself the voice of the liberal movement...or Oprah did....and the democrats had them as keynote speakers and weren't allowed to criticize them under penalty of neutering (which has happened to those poor republicans who thought they had elected voices for the party. What a boon for the Democrats right now.
