Cary, I find it interesting that my market "feel" has
a similar timing to your observations about AMAT
CC. I am using Jan OEX puts to cover extra perceived
risk over the next few weeks or months if necessary.
If the uncertainty over industry ramp-up is relieved
by the CC I will surely consider reducing my hedge.
Moreover, if volatilities are not too high I would
consider adding to my AMAT '00 Leap Calls at that time.

As for the uncertainty related to Asia, I agree with
Bagley from a prior post(italics mine):

My concern is more focused on the reduction in
dollar based discretionary spending
on the part of consumers in
Asia. Growth in consumer spending in Asia has been one of the
drivers for increased semiconductor consumption by PCs and consumer electronic devices. I would be more comfortable if DRAM prices and currencies in Asia would strengthen. Even with these difficulties
I am positive about the semiconductor and semiconductor equipment industries. These difficulties call for prudence and not panic.

I would add also a concern about U.S. discretionary spending if
the U.S. markets exhibit a rapid decline.

Good investing all.

Cary, If you had a five to ten year horizon and were going to invest in five stocks (semi's & equip) what would they be and why? I don't care about short term flucuations. Who are the best positioned regardless of market cap? Also, do you follow the distributors? I would appreciate any insight you can offer!

Cary, Ian, and All:

Here is a quote from the CNNfn market wrap-up.

"Other technology stocks that took a beating Friday included Intel (INTC), down 1-7/8 at 80, after the company said it would postpone the opening of a $1.3 billion Texas semiconductor plant. Intel said a decline in demand for "flash" memory chips was the reason behind the delay. The plant is now expected to open in late 2000."

How long did INTC postpone the opening of the semiconductor lab? It seems like a long delay just because there was " a decline in demand for "flash" memory chips." Does INTC see the demand in chips to be low for 2 to 3 years? Or is there some reason for the delay other than that stated?

Thanks for your input,

I2

Cary,

<< I think the probability of positive guidance is 65%>>

What type of figures are you expecting from Mr. Morgan in Nov. to constitute this 65% scenario?
