In some cases, yes the government needs to play a role. When the government has played a role in aiding oil to become the behemoth it has become, they have to then play a role in incubating the renewables energy industry to the point where it can overcome the barriers to entry. The end result will be a competitive energy industry where we have choices on what energy sources we want to use based on price.

Price is only a useful free market comparison when price is not manipulated. Today, prices for oil and gas in this country are simply not reflecting the true cost to our economy. If you want something closer to true costs, go visit Europe for a little while. Their prices more accurately reflect the cost of gas and they do it through taxation to recoup all of the invisible costs. We should do the same. Then renewables will be competitive. The sooner we get off of oil, the sooner we can live in a world where our foreign policy and economy aren't held hostage to our oil suppliers whims.
