The Recovery and Reinvestment Program is supposed to stimulate the economy in the short term and also to reinvest in infrastructure, education, etc. for benefits to bear fruit 2012 and beyond.

Yes, that is the theory and no doubt that the spending will help a bit on the edges....but the government is never going to be able to spend us into prosperity. That depends on all kinds of long-term trends in the private economy which is always going to dwarf the various spending initiatives by the government.

As the article that Tim posted noted, we were on the edge of armageddon when they were looking to pass the stimulus bill and then they used some incredibly rosy projections for their budget. It wouldnt be so bad if those rosy projections gave us a budget that was close to being balanced....but they dont, which means that if we fail to hit those targets, we really could see trillion dollar budget deficits becoming a regular occurrence.
