Dear Ratan:

I do not think VAKIL was present 5000 years back in INDIA.

Well if VAKIL was present then there would not have been the INDUS VALLEY CIVILIZATION (Any present day VAKILSHAB! please do not take it seriously, I just mentioned it as an argument.)

So my point is that the saying is not 5000 years old. Most of the cases used to be settled at the Village Council (So called GRAM PANCHAYET, originally cosisting of 5 members)or at DURBUR or royal court ( of King or even Zemindar or landlord), there was no VAKIL (or pleader) required. I am not sure whether the word itself is that old. I think in the court of King Vikramaditya royal pleader used to narrate the dispute.( I recall some where reading about it but not my subject, so probably I am wrong.) But no way 5000 years old saying.

Thanks,

Mintu
