Is it just me... or do I smell "old tires" burning?

Well the Senate "blinked" on the Omnibus, and may effect as much as $30B of spending reductions in 2009.

The economic fight is boiling down to three categories of politicians:

1. Those that "know" that spending money anywhere on anything in the lower 48 ASAP is the only way to stop all the lemmings from reaching the cliff;

2. Those that "know" that only maximum spending reductions and lower taxes for those getting more than $250k/year is the way to save the a "free" America; and

3. Those that "know" they don't "know" squat but want to get electoral credit for fixing this mess anyway.

Category #2 won a major battle for the 2009 Omnibus funding bill yesterday. If they continue to press their success they could easily delay the recovery for as much time as their $30B would have lasted.

Just as a point of reference $30B would be sufficient to pay a million people $30k a piece; or fund 200k+ jobs for two years; or fund GM and Chrysler for 6 months or so; or rebuild every levy in New Orleans and Sacramento too.

But apparently we've decided to "save" this money instead. Let's see how high our marvelous markets rise today.
