I think a lot of things contributed to our current situation, but IMO the three biggest things are:

1. An unsound monetary system. The Fed was created to SOCIALIZE the risks of banking and to transfer wealth to government and Wall St via inflation. Government does not want to cut spending or raise taxes. People understand taxes and spending cuts and can throw people out of office, but they don't understand the role of the Fed and inflation.

2. All the social programs that can't be funded without crippling the private sector or destroying the currency.

3. Corrupt individuals in the private that promote the expansion of government and get favorable laws passed to enrich themselves.

All of them have one thing in common - expanding the power and size of government.
