Tiger Woods to Play Second PGA Tour Event Next Week in Miami

By Michael Buteau

March 6 (Bloomberg) -- Tiger Woods will return to the U.S. PGA Tour for next week’s CA Championship at Doral, two weeks after losing in the second round of the Accenture Match Play event in Arizona.

Woods, a three-time winner at Doral Resort & Spa’s Blue Monster course in Miami, made the announcement on his Web site today. Woods won the Ford Championship at Doral in 2005 and 2006 and the World Golf Championships-CA Championship at the course in 2007. He finished fifth last year.

The world’s top-ranked golfer hasn’t played in a stroke-play tournament since winning the U.S. Open in June. He then missed eight months after undergoing surgery to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee on June 24.

Because the CA Championship, which has a $1.4 million winner’s prize, doesn’t have a 36-hole cut, Woods is assured to play four rounds.

Woods has won 15 World Golf Championships events and has never finished outside the top 10 in his career at Doral.

Hall of Fame Basketball Coach Chuck Daly Has Pancreatic Cancer

By Mason Levinson

March 6 (Bloomberg) -- Hall of Fame basketball coach Chuck Daly has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, a spokesman for his family said.

His prognosis was not disclosed.

“Chuck is being treated for the cancer and the family is requesting privacy,” Detroit Pistons spokesman Matt Dobek said in a statement. “When he was coaching, Chuck was always known as the Prince of Pessimism. Right now Chuck Daly is the King of Optimism.”

Daly, 78, coached the Pistons to National Basketball Association titles in 1989 and 1990, and was the head coach of the “Dream Team,” the Olympic gold medal-winning U.S. squad that featured Hall of Famers, including Michael Jordan, Larry Bird and Magic Johnson.

Daly has a 638-437 coaching record in 1,075 games for the Pistons, Cavaliers, Nets and Magic. His victories rank 19th on the league’s all-time list. He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1994, and the No. 2, marking his two titles, was retired in his honor by the Pistons in 1997.
