It is somewhat of a tradition for antisemitism to rise to a higher level as times get tough. Some things never end. European monarchs and other forms of governments are to blame for this, as it comes from their former practices of denying Jews entry into trades, leaving them only the then despised occupations of mercantilism and banking. Hence there are today disproportionate populations of Jews - and over many generations - in banking, merchandising, and other forms of work not socially acceptable to the ruling classes of an earlier time.
