Since the Democrats control both houses of Congress, exactly how is anyone in the way? Can't the Democrats do anything they want?

No... they need votes in the Senate to avoid the filibuster. You probably knew that.

But it's not helpful when the wingnuts are screaming "socialist, Marxist, socialist....!!!!!!!!!!!!".

Not quite. There is still the filibuster. It is fully within the power of the GOP to ensure that no Dem bill makes it to a vote. Therefore, every bill that gets voted on needs a few GOP members to make sure it passes. That's the truth and we'd better thank God for that. It may be the one thing restraining the uber-liberals from getting exactly what they want.
