I remember way back in the 90s when MsX was doing the P&F thing and Tom Dorsey came out to San Jose to do a seminar. One of the things that Tom said really did stick with me. He said "sometimes the best trades are the trades you never make".

In other words, sometimes doing nothing is the right thing to do.

I think that this is something our politicians really need to understand. As much as it may be against their perceived role.

I really believe that anything that the government did or can do, whether it is under Obama's administration or Bush's, will cause more long term damage and prolong the economic fiasco we are in.

Bush backed some of those bailout packages before he left office and just because he is a republican doesn't make it the right thing to do. Obama does appear to be using the economic crisis as a foot in the door for a lot of other political changes. But I believe that they will have the net effect of amplifying the negative effects of economic crisis.

I am of the opinion that we give our presidents a little bit too much credit for our economic situation. And if things are going great, they are more than happy to take the credit. If they aren't going great, it's always the other guy's fault.

There are other factors at play...and yes, Congress is one of them, and of course, big business, but also the activities that go on in other countries as well. But the most important actions that we should be concerned about are our own. At best, all of the other players were just leading our collective horses to the water. We didn't have to drink.

Unfortunately, we are world (not just a nation) of idiots who can't do the simple math that shows that truly, you cannot get something for nothing. There ain't no such thing as a free lunch. But politicians who peddle the free lunches will get a significant portion of the population with their hands out.

Back to the original thought, where things may not be (or ever have been) perfect, when it comes to healthcare, economic stimulus packages, industry bailouts etc....in most cases, the right thing for the government to do is nothing. In fact, that was the intent of our founding fathers. The US constitution was meant to define what limited powers we gave to the government, NOT what rights we have. The Federal government has assumed powers that it was never meant to have. Instead of doing nothing, we can now expect the government to micromanage our lives in many ways. Again, it ain't just the democrats. The government has no business in saying who we can or cannot marry. Marriage is a religious institution and should only be done in the church. If churches want to say "no gay marriages"....that's their business. But when it comes to the legal partnership part of the equation, the government should have a blind eye as to the gender of the partners. It just isn't their business.

If Republicans (in general) were more consistent with the "keep government out of our lives" message, I think they would have been more successful in keeping a big chunk of the voters who would like to keep government out of their personal lives.
