"They seem unwilling or unable to be critical of their leaders."

Bingo. It goes against everything they stand for.

They have been elected to spend the collected tax money from day to day and run the gov't.

Several trillion in new spending isn't "the day to day running of the government".

Obama was elected after he promised a net spending cut.

One of the things I've noticed esp. among people on the right there is a certain helplessness when it comes to directing their elected officials. They seem unwilling or unable to be critical of their leaders.

I haven't noticed it too much from the right. Much more from the Democrats about Obama.

Its certainly not something I'm reluctant to do. I must have made hundreds, of posts just about Bush, just counting ones with negative comments about his spending habits, and it would be an even larger number (possibly thousands) if people where regularly arguing against the point that he (and congress) spent too much of our money. It was arrogant when Bush did it, now its arrogant from Obama.
