IIRC, Washington state is projected to have an $8B budget gap this next year, and at about 1/5 CA's pop, that is just as bad. But you don't hear much about it. It would be useful to have a list of state budget gaps normalized to population. CA might not look so anomalous.

They don't have Friday furloughs anymore. Now, gov't employees must take 2 days/month off, but the day is their choice.

Tax refund checks are going out.
