It seems a mutual thing rather than somebody kicking the USA down the stairs = an abdication of leadership and abandonment by people who are running scared of losing their money. When people around the world trusted the USA to turn $5 into $10, cash came streaming in and the huge creative and productive industry swung into gear and fulfilled the promise. That happened for half a century. Also, the USA invested around the world and brought mountains of profits back for reinvestment and for investment around the world. Now, the lustre has been lost in a process of abdication. Madoff, Lehman, Citi, GM, GE and all the rest did it to themselves [and their investors and creditors]. It's not that anyone will kick while the USA is down, though opportunists like North Korea, Iran etc might try their luck which would not be a good move. It might be that Biden is right and somebody will think it a good idea to test Obama in a confrontational militaristic or other damaging way. That would be in the same category as the Argentinian militarists thinking it a good idea to challenge Margaret Thatcher over the Falkland Islands. Perhaps Britain was no longer so great, there was economic malaise and plenty of other things for Maggie to worry about, but the response and outcome were not surprising. Obama is a tough nut. Sure, he might come across as palling around with Amendiejihad, being weak on asking Putin to help with the nuclear dispute, asking for moderate Taleban to please help out, and being generally Mr Nice Guy. Bullies, thugs and "tough" guys might see weakness. They should be very circumspect because they are likely to get very short shrift and end up wishing like the Argentinians that they'd minded their own business. Having offered friendship and negotiated associations, he is likely to be less than forgiving of nasty responses to his attempts at getting along happily. Bill O'Reilly of Fox TV, who is hardly a leading fan club member of Obama's left-wing ideologies, thought that Obama is a tough guy, or words to that effect. I'm inclined to agree with him. I'm looking forwards to "the test". Mqurice
