How do you think we should have responded instead?

Wow. You and I are very similar. Before 9/11, I didn't care about politics either. I just mechanically voted when election day came and always voted Republican, as I'd been raised. When in polite political discussions, I'd always recite what Fox News pumped me with. 9/11 changed everyone. I think it woke quite a few people up and made them question their previous beliefs. In that way, it was a growth experience, at least for those who were introspective about it all.
