People believe what is most convenient for them to believe. That which requires the least effort. To believe our government is corrupt, even though the evidence is everywhere, is not convenient. I would rephrase that a bit. People believe what is least psychologically painful to believe. It is quite painful to believe "I have been a complete idiot for trusting CNBC talking heads, my broker, government, etc." It is less painful to believe "no one could see this coming" or "everyone else is down 60% too." I spoke to a co-blackjack player yesterday at a casino who couldn't bring himself to admit that his staunch support of Bush II for the past 8 years was misguided. We will do all sorts of psychological summersaults to avoid facing the (often painful) truth (e.g., denial, blame, projection, etc.). In this way we are all imprisoned in a sense by our avoidance of truth. It is no coincidence that the great book says and the truth will set you free. As I read on SI recently (paraphrased), of all who have deceived me, I am the worst. best... LIG
