Yeah, you're right, but the cat is out of the bag, and the best I think we can do is regulate them like any other "security" or "insurance policy."

Impossible IMO. We could have no insurance, checking accounts, credit cards or fiat currencies (i.e., cash), all of which are derivatives in some form (i.e., contingent promises to pay).
