I suppose talking one to one and delivering a speech in public w/o teleprompter are different. Charming people one to one off the cuff, handling them, reassuring them, as he wrote of doing, is something he can do.

I lean to John's view of him as a figurehead - a willing and agreeable one - to folks like Axelrod, Emanuel, and via them the Congressional and party leadership. He's not slow-witted, but is indecisive (thus the willingness to be a figurehead instead of leading himself) and lazy (with a capacity to handle so much and no more which is being exceeded now).

he told them what they wanted to hear. i expect he also got soft questions in these interviews, not the gotcha type questions competition received. do we know if questions are submitted prior to one on one meetings with Obama?

But he dazzled David Brooks and hundreds of other smart people in one-to-one interviews! You can't do that if you're slow witted.

You can dazzle people who not only choose to be dazzled but who have practically hypnotized themselves into it.

Besides, there is an element of ugly truth here. The one Biden pointed out long ago. BO doesn't speak like he's from the 'hood or just cut a rap album. For some people, that's enough to impress with speaking abilities.

I think that's ridiculous myself.

I never thought BO was a great speaker. That was just part of the MSM hype. He's always been all hat and no cattle to my mind.
