""Selfishness" and "altruism" take on very unique meanings in an Ayn Rand world."

Hmm, let's see. She took words which have particular meanings, redefines them and then argues that one of them, altruism, is fake because of that...

The Danish philosopher Søren Kierkegaard (1813-1855) religiously stressed the value of the individual in a very similar way to Ayn Rand almost 100 years later.

"For Kierkegaard, true individuality is called selfhood. Becoming aware of our true self is our true task and endeavor in life — it is an ethical imperative, as well as preparatory to a true religious understanding." (Wiki)

He pretty much paved the way for the existentialist movement.
