could it be a legislator who is a same sex marriage enthusiast with a grudge against the Catholic Church?

The chair and co-chair of the Judiciary Committee are gay. Gay marriage is an ongoing issue here, their committee had a hearing on it last week. An impartial observer might say it has the appearance of impropriety.

>>McDonald is gay and is one of five openly gay members of the Connecticut General Assembly, serving alongside Sen. Andrew M. Maynard (D-Stonington), as well as Reps. Mike Lawlor (D-East Haven), Jason Bartlett (D-Bethel) and Beth Bye (D-West Hartford).[6] His campaigns have won the backing of the Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund. McDonald is in a long-term relationship with Charles Gray.

In March 2009 McDonald and Judiciary committee co-chair Mike Lawlor proposed a bill (SB 1098) to regulate the management of Roman Catholic parishes in Connecticut. Opponents charged the bill would violate the separation of church and state clause in the First Amendment.

It's gotten the attention of Bill Donohue

>>"Bishop Lori is correct to say that the bill 'is a thinly-veiled attempt to silence the Catholic Church on the important issues of the day, such as same-sex marriage,' '' Donohue said. "Indeed, it is payback: this brutal act of revenge by Lawlor and McDonald, two champions of gay marriage, is designed to muzzle the voice of the Catholic Church.''

Donohue added, "By singling out the Catholic Church - no other religion has been targeted - Lawlor and McDonald have demonstrated that they are ethically unfit to continue as lawmakers. They have evinced a bias so strong, and so malicious, that it compromises their ability to serve the public good. They should therefore by expelled by their colleagues.''
