It's a big pistol, and probably kicks like a mule and sounds like a cannon. I wouldn't choose a pistol that large for my first. I'd get a 22 or a 9mm.

22 caliber pistols are preferred by hit men. They are super accurate, don't make a lot of noise, don't kick much at all and will kill as well as the larger calibers if you put one in a guys brain. They don't have a lot of "stopping power" if you miss the noggin though.

Glocks are the most favored pistols around today.

A great way to buy guns is to demo them at shooting ranges that also sell them. I buy used guns at gun shows myself.

There's a wealth of information online about guns, as well as guns for sale. Google "personal protection", "home defense", etc.
