I think the small rural population is a plus: Lots of surplus food for the rest of us. Contrast that with China or India where most of the food stays in the countryside to feed those that grow it -- a little disruption, and the cities starve. I think most of the US population is pretty skilled compared to other countries. Tool ownership and use to repair stuff in the house and the yard is pervasive. It's not that hard to convert backyards to vegetable gardens in a pinch. Knowledge can be spread fast and efficiently via the Internet.
