I am a little puzzled here why is this professor of economics blaming America for WWII.

I think your overstating his point, making it in to something that he wouldn't support. Certainly the Nazis and the Japanese government are to blame for WWII. OTOH polices of their opponents can help contribute to the conditions that cause the war to happen.

Just like a mugger is to blame for the mugging, but walking around in a high crime neighborhood, by yourself, flashing lots of cash, makes getting mugged more likely.

In terms of WWII, a world wide trade war helped cause the great depression, which helped cause the Nazi's rise to power, which in turn led to the war in Europe. Also the Japanese probably wouldn't have attacked us in 1941 if we had not put an embargo on them (although they where already at war against China, so its not like they would be peaceful, and also they may have attacked us later).

I also question his statements about the free trade----could it be that that is part of why we are in the financial turmoil we are now?

Hos so?
