Some of the financial euphoria may be driven by the upcoming house panel meeting re: relaxing the mark-to-market requirements. No one knows exactly what valuation will be as a result of altered accounting requirements, but its fair to think that the bank balance sheets would look better. To your point, however, that might lead to a short term rise in the financials, but the fundamentals are not in fact changed at all. After a rally, there is more gloom to come.
