In quantity, you can get some microcontrollers for $0.25 or less. At that price, they can be used for a lot of things that used to take small quantities of logic chips.

The smaller ones I talked about are more expensive. A couple od bucks single quantity. Closer to a buck in volume. Yet it still has a decent set of peripherals.

With Zigbee(cheap wireless networking) in the mix these days, these things are going to be everywhere doing all kinds of things.
