Bilberry, from the IBM site you linked:

>>IBM has shipped over a quarter of a billion MR heads to date.<<

Most of those were shipped internally. IBM had its first
DD with MR heads out in 1991. Nobody knows MR better -
and others can't just copy IBM. Too many tricks and
trade secrets. That's why IBM 5 (?) years ago sued SEG
and an ex-IBM employee who had known about the IBM MR
family jewels.

Bilberry -

In the WDC CC they stated that IBM/RDRT are supplying the 2.1GB heads, APM the portfolio heads.

I know that IBM is also supplying heads to Samsung(as of Apr97), their first outside supply they said(I think).

FWIW, in the RDRT CC one of the ANALysts mentioned that he had heard all of the DD manufacturers say that the IBM head is very expensive. He asked if RDRT heard this as well. They glossed over the question and said IBM is definitely a competitor. I don't know if that has cleared anything up, but it's info.
