and the point that many of their actions serve to make the mess worse falls on deaf ears.

I fear that if the economy does get better (which it would be expected to do), the Dems will claim credit, and thus gain respect and support for ideas that make things worse.

Its even possible, if a bit less likely, that if things get worse they will be able to say "it was all the Republican's fault", and "our only fault is that we didn't go far enough" (with big government policies), "in our efforts to fix it" (Krugman would be their point man on this)
