One major difference I see is that islamists will kill people who don't convert while Christians gave that up several centuries ago.

Expansion by torture is *Quite a bit different than expansion by Evangelizing* -- as the Sharia Law of Islam explicitly calls for Violence as a means!!
The Christian Faith calls for *Love* as its means and in its very Doctrines - which is quite different!
The way a religion expands and developes is more important than just the fact that it does expand.
